Police raid Randall's Island migrant shelter after deadly shooting: NYPD

RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Police raided a migrant shelter at Randall's Island with K-9 units in search of guns and drugs on Friday, according to a tweet from the NYPD.

Authorities said the enforcement action is in direct response to Monday's shooting in front of the tent shelter that left a woman dead and two others injured.

Migrants were not allowed to enter or leave the shelter as the raid was conducted. One person told PIX11's Henry Rosoff that they waited outside for five hours after being told the search would be quick.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry said police would remove "any dangerous contraband" discovered during the raid.

"The safety and security of all New Yorkers, and every single person in our care, is our top priority. To that end, NYPD has commenced an operation at the Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center at Randall’s Island to remove any dangerous contraband from the shelter," he posted on X.

Police cancelled a press conference promised by the NYPD Chief of Department, saying authorities would issue a statement instead.
