A non-profit pregnancy center this week filed a lawsuit against California Attorney General Rob Bonta to challenge his efforts to block pro-life speech about Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) services, arguing that Bonta’s actions infringe on constitutional rights.

According to a July 30 news release from the Thomas More Society, Culture of Life Family Services (COLFS) has now begun a legal battle against Bonta, seeking to affirm that sharing information about APR is a protected form of speech.

Attorneys from the Thomas More Society initiated the lawsuit on July 30 in the U.S. District Court Southern District of California in San Diego, challenging Bonta’s unconstitutional actions against pregnancy help organizations’ right to discuss APR.

In September 2023, Bonta sued Heartbeat International (HBI) to halt Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) services, accusing HBI of disseminating “false or misleading statements” and engaging in “unlawful, unfair, and fraudulent business practices” by providing information about and access to APR to women in need.

In the July 30 news release, Executive Vice President and Head of Litigation of the Thomas More Society Peter Breen criticized Bonta for denying women the chance to reverse a chemical abortion.

“Abortion Pill Reversal gives these women a second chance to choose life,” Breen said. “In his quest to silence pregnancy help ministries, Bonta is violating Culture of Life Family Services’ right to speak and aid women in exercising their reproductive privacy rights.”

Special Counsel to the Thomas More Society Paul Jonna said “it is tragic and beyond comprehension” that Bonta, with a $1.3 billion budget, is targeting pregnancy centers instead of addressing other issues in the state, such as crime and corruption.

“Bonta’s actions are politically motivated and blatantly unconstitutional,” Jonna stated. “We are proud to represent COLFS in its fight to protect its rights and the rights of its patients.”
