NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- As you immerse yourself into this pool on a hot day you'll also get immersed into one of Newark's largest works of art.

"I want to make an impact in the community," said artist Mohammed Awudu. "I want to use my artwork to inspire communities around the globe."

Awudu is the man behind Boylan Street Recreation Center's new, aquatic-themed mural. For nearly a month, Awudu transformed the outer wall surrounding the center's pool, bringing to life creatures from the ocean and children exploring the waters.

Born and raised in Ghana, Awudu loves to share his gift of art with the City. "There are a lot of Ghanaian communities out here, there are people I grew up in Ghana with that live here."

"As visitors we gaze upon the inspiring artwork, they are all encouraged to dive into their own dreams that will foster a spirit of positivity," said Newark's West Ward Councilman Dupre Kelly.

It's all about the kids - the City says hundreds come to the pool almost every day in the summer. Watching them swim as he crafted his mural, Awudu says the message of the art is to dedicate yourself to being disciplined in all that you do.

"There's a pool here," said Awudu. "When you go to the pool and then out to swim, it takes a lot of discipline. So once you master all these acts of discipline, trust me, you can survive in any situation, any environment in this world."
