On Wednesday, the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) kicked off its yearly convention in Chicago with a visit from President Donald Trump.

Both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, the presidential nominee for the Democratic Party, received invitations to the conference. The convention has had a long tradition of inviting presidential candidates to speak to journalists during election years. This time, only Trump showed up. A live Q&A session was conducted at the NABJ conference during which  Trump was interviewed by Rachel Scott from ABC News, Harris Faulker from Fox News, and Kadia Goba from Semafor.

Trump Calls Out Black Journalists For Inviting Under False Pretext

Trump was met with mixed reactions in the audience. Many cheered while others scoffed at his statements. He called out the panel for starting over an hour late, beginning with a “rude” introduction, and inviting him there under false pretext by claiming his opponent would also be present.

Issues discussed during the panel included illegal immigration, pardons for participants on Jan. 6, and the recent anti-Israel protests in the capital. (READ MORE: Would a Harris Presidency Help Blacks?)

Race was another heavily discussed topic. In addition to addressing allegations of racism, Trump called into question Harris’s race. Harris has a Jamaican father and an Indian mother.

Trump claimed Harris has changed which one she “promotes,” saying she only recently “turned black” instead of Indian. Harris’s team responded by telling Trump he “needs to stop playing games and actually show up to the debate on September 10.” (WATCH: The Spectacle Ep. 133: Thinking of the Roman Empire: Is the US Following In Its Footsteps?)

Scott indicated that the NABJ was “in contact” with Kamala Harris’s team about scheduling a different time for a Q&A session in September after she did not attend this one.
