More than a dozen indicted in Bronx gang takedown: 'This is a very violent crew'

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A major gang takedown in the Bronx targeted two local gangs responsible for wreaking havoc throughout the streets, in transit and in NYCHA, police said.

Their violence did not go without inflicting pain and injury to innocent residents.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark and members of the NYPD announced the indictment of at least 15 gang members for 20 shootings that resulted in 10 innocent bystanders being shot. Many of the gang members are teenagers.

PIX11 News was the only station at a pre-dawn raid as police arrested the remaining suspects.

At the home of one of the suspects, a mother unleashed her fury on police officers, barring them from entering her apartment to arrest her 20-year-old son.

The mother put up a fight, but the officers were able to take him into custody. Police said he is a member of the 1300 Crew.

The gang is responsible for several shootings and robberies in the Bronx, including the robbery and attack of an off-duty police officer. Surveillance video showed the moment when the officer was brutally beaten.

Police also accused the gang of shooting a 73-year-old grandmother as she sat in front of her building talking to a friend. That incident was also caught on surveillance video. The grandmother was hit by a bullet in her leg.

"This is a very violent crew," NYPD Assistant Chief Jason Savino said.

The grandmother said her life has been changed forever since the shooting. She has not been able to go outside and feel safe.

After three years of working on the cases involving the gangs, detectives are able to bring some closure to the victims and help make the streets a bit safer.

Many of the gang members are facing murder and attempted murder charges. If convicted, they could face 25 years to life in prison.
