Manu Bhaker is on the cusp of rewriting history in her second appearance in the Olympics as she gets ready to hit the bulls eye in the women 25m pistol final at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Saturday (August 3). She can become the first-ever Indian sportsperson, from any discipline, to bag three individual medal at a single Olympic Games.
The Indian shooter has already won the women 10m air pistol bronze and the 10m air pistol mixed team bronze medal with Sarabjit Singh. On Saturday, Bhaker has the opportunity to win an unprecedented third medal and possibly even a gold medal at the Chateauroux shooting range having qualified in 2nd place for the women 25m pistol final.
The 22-year-old shooter continued to dominate the event and remained among the top three almost throughout the qualification phase of ‘Precision’ and ‘Rapid’ rounds, aggregated 590 to be placed second behind only Hungary’s Veronika Major, who equalled the Olympic record with a score of 592. She was in sizzling form in the pistol qualification rounds, firing 294 in the gruelling ‘Precision’ round with scores of 97, 98 and 99.
Just after winning her second bronze medal in Paris, in 10m air pistol mixed team event, Manu had urged the countrymen not to be ‘disappointed’ if she can’t add more medals to the tally. However, the Jhajjar shooter looks in prime form to either go for gold or silver on Saturday.
Manu, the second youngest Indian athlete to win an Olympic medal after shuttler PV Sindhu, has already mentioned that she looks up to ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and Sindhu because they have ‘proved themselves’.
India has won all three medals so far in shooting, with Manu bagging two and Swapnil Kusale taking the bronze in 50m rifle three-positions on Thursday.
