President expects Cyprus problem developments this month

Developments in the direction of resuming stalled talks on the Cyprus problem may be announced soon, with President Nikos Christodoulides hoping this will happen in August.

The president told a Famagusta delegation on Friday that the UN and the EU have shown an interest in and commitment to the Cyprus problem.

During the meeting ahead of Saturday’s anti-occupation event organised by the Famagusta municipality in Dherynia, marking 50 years since the Turkish invasion of the island, Christodoulides said this year was the 20th anniversary since Cyprus’ accession to the EU.

Cyprus’ EU capacity, he said, will continue to exist after the Cyprus problem is solved.

“I can say that I am glad this interest and this commitment exists on behalf of the UNSG, as he conveyed it to me recently during a meeting we had in Paris, and on behalf of the EU by the president of the European commission.”

Christodoulides expressed hope that there would be some developments this month.

“I hope that in August we will hear of some developments, developments in the direction of resuming negotiations.”

At 7pm, Famagusta municipality will lead a march from the church of St Modestos to the crossing point in Dherynia.

At 8pm, Christodoulides will be the main speaker at the event in the gardens of the Famagusta municipality in Dherynia.

The event includes a cultural programme, with Greek singers Pantelis Thalassinos and Rita Antonopoulou, with the participation of the Famagusta municipality choir under the direction of Cypriot conductor Nikos Vihas.
