Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Andrew Nembhard: 'Didn't know he was this good'

Nembhard finished the game with 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting and led Canada in efficiency with 19. Gilgeous-Alexander had previously named him as the most surprising player on the squad. He stuck to his words after the tough win. “I would say the same thing. I knew he was good, obviously. Didn’t know he was this good,” Shai smiled. “He’s a really talented player, he works hard. Super poised, can pass, can do a lot of things on the basketball court to hurt you. Whatever team has him, it’s lucky to have him.” “He was aggressive, and he just took what [the] defense gave him. He never forced it. That’s what makes him him,” Gilgeous-Alexander explained.

At 24, he’s the youngest player on the team. The 2nd-youngest, Andrew Nembhard, was arguably its best player today (18 pts) – 4:12 PM

That last 3 seconds of Canada-Spain was fascinating. First Spain calls its last timeout to set up a play in case SGA makes FT. Why would you not call the TO after the make to advance the ball. And then if you’re Canada and you know you they can’t call a TO, why not miss purposely – 1:44 PM

The most any player played in any game for Canada was RJ vs. Greece, 32+ minutes. SGA played 30+ in that game. Only two times any player played >30.
On downside, might make their QF tougher. On bright side, everyone should be very fresh – 1:43 PM

88-85 @CanBball men over Spain, eliminating one of the great international programs of all time. Spain did what they needed to keep it very close — led in 3s (10-6) and offensive rebounds (17-8), plus great bench play. SGA with 20, Nembhard with 18 off the bench. – 1:10 PM

Andrew Nembhard was really good off the bench for Canada in a 88-85 win over Spain. He finished with 18pts (8/10 shooting), 1reb and 2asts.

Canada survives and wins Group A, going 3-0. Final: 88-85 over Spain. What a game. Top-3 seed for Canada in quarterfinals.

Just a tremendous half of team defense for @CanBball men as they hold Spain to 38 per cent shooting and 3/19 from 3. Spain has got to line 11 times b/c of a couple of fouled 3-point shooters, but otherwise breathing room limited. Canada 58% from floor, 5/8 from 3. SGA w 13. – 12:06 PM

Bit of an ugly half until Gilgeous-Alexander decided to takeover late in the 2nd quarter. 13 points for SGA. Canada’s starters have been excellent, especially on D – they’ve forced a couple of 24s violations and held Spain to 38% shooting (3-19 3P). Canada leads 49-38. – 12:00 PM

More on this storyline

Todd Ramasar: “I think it’s good for both sides. I think in a year or two that people are going to say it’s a bargain for the Pacers and maybe even after next season. But it’s security for Andrew, which you don’t always see for a second-round pick. The fourth year of his contract falls off, which was $2 million and now he’s earning close to $20 million. That sets him up for the future. It takes pressure off him so he can focus purely on his game and help contribute to winning basketball with the Pacers.” -via SportsKeeda / July 29, 2024
It’s not surprising that Pascal Sikam and Andrew Nembhard got these extensions. But what do you think were the turning points for Pascal and Andrew that a deal would happen? Todd Ramasar: “With Pascal, from the onset when he was traded from Toronto to Indiana, you could see that Indiana had a very talented team from the rosters with the players and all the way to the coaching staff and front office. They made it to the Finals in the In-Season tournament. Even though they ended up losing, you saw the potential of a young roster. As we were evaluating that in light of a trade, it was about how Pascal would fit with that team. The missing piece to that team was really a versatile forward to complement Tyrese, Myles [Turner] and Andrew. So once Pascal got there, I think there was an adjustment period. Naturally so. For any player that has been with an organization for eight years, there would be a transition or an adjustment. But for Pascal, it was more so with the tempo because of the speed the Pacers play at and the way that Rick Carlisle does a really good job with managing minutes to keep them fresh for the postseason.” -via SportsKeeda / July 29, 2024
How about with Andrew Nembhard? Todd Ramasar: “As for Andrew, when a player is born into an organization, it’s different because it’s everything that you hope for. In Andrew’s draft class two years ago, the Pacers chased him in the draft. It was always Chad [Buchanan], Kevin Pritchard and Rick Carlisle showing up at our Pro-Day, at the combine or reaching out proactively asking questions and doing their due diligence. They selected Andrew at No. 31. Then fast forward through the draft to the regular season. A few injuries happened to that roster. All of a sudden, Rick trusted Andrew and he never looked back. To get the games that he started as a rookie and making the rookie-sophomore game, he took that momentum into the offseason and continued to work on his game and on his body and made investments in himself.” -via SportsKeeda / July 29, 2024
