EastEnders legend makes surprising return to screen as fans praise his latest role

EASTENDERS icon Sid Owen has landed a surprise new role and it’s proving a hit with fans.

The actor, who is best known for playing market trader Ricky Butcher, portrays a tough London gangster in a new music video by Yours.

The four piece – made up of Maverick Sabre, New Machine, Jake Hall and Sonny Hall – fuse the worlds of fashion and music and have created a short film Guy Ritchie would be proud of for new single Love Might Make Me Better.

Sid, 52, can be seen letting loose in a leather jacket and shades, grooving as he menacingly threatens each of member of the group, who are all tied to chairs, with a cricket bat before dousing them in petrol.

It appears to be payback as the result of a heist gone wrong.

The soap veteran loved being a part of it, commenting on the finished product: “[fire emoji] Great video guys.”

Former Towie man Jake Hall said: “@sidowen thank you sid lovely working with you top man.”

While Maverick posted: “The 4 musketeers ft. @sidowen.”

Yours formed last year and quickly landed a deal with Defected Records.

Label CEO Wez Saunders said at the time: “Sometimes something comes along that surprises you, that’s designed to touch your soul, that’s designed to tear up the rule book, something that catches you off guard and unprepared, and sometimes that something just connects. In the same way Defected have our community at the front and centre of everything we do, the Yours collective is literally designed for you.

“Fronted by the super-talented Maverick Sabre, New Machine, Jake Hall and Sonny Hall, this collective of talented musicians and creatives from the fashion world bring a continental vibe to East London, and East London fashion to the continent. We have signed an album deal. An album that’s done and unless the entire Defected HQ’s tastes are suddenly sour, an album which we are pretty sure you’re going to love.”

The new release follows Maverick’s guest vocal on 2024 dance anthem Weak by Vintage Culture.

Prior to that he released four studio albums, one of which spent three weeks in the top 10. His best performing chart singles to date are Lonely The Brave, which reached number two, and Let Me Go – a collaboration with Chase and Status.

After leaving ITVBe show Towie eight years ago, Jake has gone on to launch a successful career in fashion and has seen the likes of David Beckham and Mike Tyson wearing his By Jake Hall designs.

Meanwhile, Sid was just 16 when he landed a role on EastEnders, which he has continued to play on and off until as recently as January last year.

He credits the soap with saving him from a potential life of crime, saying: “I grew up on a massive council estate. All my family, friends and neighbours were involved in crime. That was all I knew.

“I grew up as a petty thief. I did that because my three older brothers were doing it.

“It stems from where you grow up and your background and being on the poverty line.

“And I lost my mum at six… my dad was in prison. So I could have easily lost the plot. I could have easily gone down the wrong path.

“Thank God I went on my own path and stayed out of crime in the area where I grew up. I shied away from it.”

But Sid’s life changed when he joined performing arts school Anna Scher Theatre in Islington, London.
