Phillies get smoked by Mariners as division lead crumbles

Final Score: Mariners 10, Phillies 2

At least the Phillies made going to bed an easy decision.

In his first start since throwing a complete-game shutout against the Cleveland Guardians, Tyler Phillips allowed three home runs, including a third deck three-run shot and a grand slam and was out of the game after an inning and two thirds.

It wasn’t all on him. Even if Phillips kept it a close game, it wouldn’t have mattered because the bats failed to produce. The Phillies were aggressive against M’s starter Bryan Woo, but it didn’t lead to success. Woo pitched a season-high seven innings and allowed zero runs while striking out six.

The Phillies woke up on Sunday with a 9.5 game lead in the NL East. The lead is now down to five. The Braves have won five of their last six while the Phillies have dropped five straight. If the Phillies don’t start winning games soon, the division lead could be completely gone by the end of this week.

Highlights

  • Brandon Marsh kept the Phillies from getting shutout for the fourth time this season with an RBI triple in the ninth to score Alec Bohm.
  • Nothing else.

Notes

  • As Tom McCarthy mentioned on the broadcast, Phillies hitters went down 0-2 against Woo 15 times.
  • The Phillies pitching staff has allowed at least four home runs in a game for the sixth time this season. Five of those games have all come within the last two months.
  • Bryce Harper struck out three times tonight, all on elevated fastballs. He has one hit in his last 34 at-bats.
  • With one out, two on and a pair of runs in during the top of the ninth, Johan Rojas struck out swinging on a pitch that hit him. The runner on third, J.T. Realmuto, came in to score, but he was told to go back to third since it’s a dead ball. That’s a good indication of just how bad this game was for the Phillies.
  • Garrett Stubbs threw a 1-2-3 inning in the eighth. He has pitched in three of the Phillies’ last 14 games.
