“I have always believed…”: Virender Sehwag on batters’ new style of play in Test cricket

Indian batting great, Virender Sehwag was a nightmare for the bowlers in any format that he played, however we saw his best in the Test cricket format. Sehwag used to play the longest format of the game as if it was a T20I and used to smash centuries playing less than 100 deliveries. There is a reason as to why he is the only Indian batter to score more than 200 runs in a single day of a Test on 3 occasions. Sehwag opened up on the change of batters’ style of play in Test cricket.

“The manner in which England is playing Test cricket, scoring at five runs an over. In our playing days, Australia used to score at 4 runs per over. I have always believed that if you can attack, then you give your team more chances to win the Test matches,” Sehwag said.

He was also asked the question whether too many T20 leagues would drive the youngsters from red-ball cricket and here is what he had to say.

“Look my elder son is 17 and he played three-day cricket for Delhi U16 but there are a lot of boys who might be waiting for that opportunity. When we were 18, there was no IPL. But, now, a youngster might think of playing IPL, and DPL gives you that opportunity.”

Sehwag was recently named the brand ambassador of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) that will be contested from August 17. His son Aaryavir will also be a part of the DPL draft.
