Larsson, 24, took part in the preliminary rounds of the Olympic 100m race in Paris and should not be confused with the retired striker.

Man United fans could not help themselves when spotting his name when it came up.

One fan posted: “Bloody hell, he’s in good shape for his age.”

A second wrote: “Henrik Larson is now into athletics after a successful footballing career? That’s wonderful.”

A third wrote: “Henrik Larsson switched careers?”

A fourth said: “Henrik Larsson doing 100m after his football career… Mental.”

Another added: “Great to see the great Henrik Larsson still competing at the top level!”

It was not the best day on the track for the Swede despite having a European bronze medal in the 60m.

He finished back in 7th in heat No 5, and was eliminated – even though he had felt as good as ever going into the games.

He said: “The worst thing I’ve been through in my career.

“I was in the shape of my life before this.

“It didn’t feel right today”.

Retired footballer Larsson, 52, had a brief spell at Man United in 2007 but certainly made his mark during the 10 weeks at the club.

He played in 13 games for the Red Devils, scoring three goals, including one in the Champions League victory over Lille.
