Peaty tested positive for Covid on Monday, just hours after earning a silver medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke.

He did not take part in the mixed 4x100m relay heats yesterday – but did return to the pool this morning.

The three-time Olympic gold medallist took part in the men’s 4x100m heat, qualifying fifth fastest alongside Joe Litchfield, Matt Richards and Oliver Morgan.

But he will not be involved in this evening’s mixed final – with Kathleen Dawson, James Wilby, Anna Hopkin and Duncan Scott selected.

Peaty was brutally honest when describing his physical struggles this week.

He said: “It’s probably the worst week of my life in terms of how my body is, and that’s no exaggeration.

“Everything’s come at once. Since Covid, it’s just every day waking up with a different thing.

“The medical team’s been brilliant. I think it’s just a victory getting on that start block there.

“Hopefully, that’ll give my body a nice little push for tomorrow.”

According to the BBC, Peaty has also been struggling with an ear infection.

Former swimming world champion Mark Foster has had his say on Peaty’s absence from this evening’s final.

The BBC pundit, 54, said: “I can only guess that’s down to the fact that after a couple of days of Covid he’s not felt that up to it. He is the best in the breaststroke.

“The Americans and Australians will be tough to beat, but we’re in it and are in with a shout.”
