I hit the renovation jackpot when we discovered what lay under our home’s old grey carpet – we can’t believe our luck

RENOVATING your home can be hard work, but can lead to you discovering some treasures in your home that you didn’t know you had.

This was certainly true of one couple, who found a beautiful home feature when they ripped up their hallway carpet.

On their @abbies.home.diy account, they shared how they were keen to get rid of the home’s old grey carpet when they moved in.

They shared: “Today we absolutely hit the home renovation jackpot.

“Our hallway had some damp coming in from by the door… under the carpet and rotting laminate we found the most amazing flooring.”

Abbie shared how the hallway had beautiful tiles that looked to be from the Victorian era.

She added: “If this is original Victorian tiles then these have been here since 1990.

“Now we need to figure out how to restore these back to their original beauty.

“They are covered in glue and paint and damaged in a few places but we are so excited to get them cleaned up and looking pretty again.”

Her video has been liked over 287,000 times, and people were very impressed with the discovery.

One said: “Gorgeous! I found woodworm under mine.”

Abbie replied: “this is our fear for the rest of the house!!”

A second person wrote: “Why someone would cover these is way beyond me.”

However, a third commented: “Why people love the tiles I’ll never know!”

An expert from Tile Doctor said how he manages to restore Victorian tiles back to their former glory.

He wrote: “To get all the dirt out of the pores of the tiles I first applied a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Remove and Go and after leaving it to soak in for ten minutes was scrubbed in with a black pad.

“I also used a steam cleaner during this process to help lift the dirt out of the pores.

“I then moved onto the loose tiles which needed to have the old adhesive removed from the tile and the base.

“The original tiles were then cleaned up by hand before new rapid setting adhesive was applied to secure them back into the floor.”

He then uses an acid rinse to clean the rules further by removing old grout smears.

The professional concluded: “The floor was rinsed again afterwards, and the soiling extracted with a wet vacuum before leaving it to dry off overnight.”

Four cheap home renovation tricks

YOU don't have to spend loads to give a room a new look. Here are five other home renovation tricks you can try.

Kitchen cupboards

One way to give your kitchen a complete transformation for less is to change the look of the kitchen cupboards. There are loads of different vinyl coverings out there to choose from, and it’s a quick and easy way to update your home.

Handles

Another thing you can try that won’t break the bank is to change up the handles. You can pick up relatively cheap handles in DIY stores, or even in the charity shop. Adding new ones to your kitchen cupboards, or doors in your house, can be extremely effective.

Leftovers

Most of us have old half-used tins of paint in the garage, but they’re often forgotten about. However, there may be enough in the pot to paint a feature wall in another room, and you won’t have to spend a penny.

Freebies

It’s worth checking your local Facebook Marketplace, or Freecycle, to see what other people are getting rid of. As they say, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. And if someone’s planning to revamp a room, they might want to get rid of a sofa, or a coffee table, which you could use to give a lounge a new look.
