Tottenham suffered their first defeat in pre-season on Saturday as Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich beat Postecoglou’s men by two goals to one.

Some fans on social media were seen to have criticised the team’s performance, but the Australian remains content.

Bayern dealt Spurs their first pre-season loss

Postecoglou’s Tottenham had enjoyed a smooth pre-season ride so far, beating Cambridge United, Hearts, QPR, Vissel Kobe and K-League All-Stars, however, a jump up in quality against Bayern Munich perhaps fell at the wrong time for Postecoglou’s side.

Pedro Porro did score a spectacular long-range effort to claw a goal back for Spurs in the 65th minute, ensuing an improved performance by Tottenham as the club’s young players continued to shine when substituted onto the pitch.

The game did, however, display Tottenham’s players as fatigued and seemingly short of the pace that Bayern were setting in the game, leaving many fans confused and concerned as to where the team that had been impressive for most of pre-season had gone.

Postecoglou has stressed the importance of training, not results

Tottenham manager, Ange Postecoglou, has recognised his team’s lacklustre display in Seoul but did put the result into perspective.

He told Football.London: “Fair to say the players were showing the effects of us working hard here for 10 days. I think we’ll get an enormous benefit from the camp we’ve done here though, but tonight we perhaps just paid the price for it”.

“I think for us, the really important thing for us was that we got 10 days of really solid training, I think the guys will feel the benefits of it when we get back. To train that much in this weather, I know from my time here [in Asia] that it’s physically and mentally draining. When we get back, we’ll have a two-week period to freshen them up”.

Postecoglou then jested, “What’s important is the 10 days of training. As far as I’m aware you don’t get points for friendly games”.

Spurs will however have the chance to get one back over Bayern Munich next weekend when the German giants visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the 10th of August.

Spurs Web opinion

As much as it is understandable, with the games often being the only football available to fans, many supporters do tend to overreact or overvalue the importance of pre-season friendlies, as Postecoglou himself stated, they don’t win you points.

However, the games and the training can aid your chances of winning points when the season arrives in a matter of weeks.

By the sounds of it, Postecoglou is pleased with his squad’s training and barring the Bayern Munich game, Tottenham have been largely impressive, as well as experimental in matches.
