UNICEF has emphasized that less than two-thirds of infants in Afghanistan are exclusively breastfed in their first six months, highlighting that breast milk alone is insufficient and infants need additional nutritional supplements such as fruits and vegetables.

The organization stated on Saturday, August 3rd, that they are working to change this trend in collaboration with the European Union.

According to the report, after six months, breast milk alone is no longer sufficient and infants should receive other nutritional supplements such as fruits and vegetables.

UNICEF has underscored its commitment to implementing programs in cooking and preparing healthy meals with local food in urban nutrition centers, with the support of the EU office.

Additionally, the organization has stated that they will focus on providing nutrition counseling to mothers on the timing and methods of breastfeeding.

This comes amid a dire humanitarian crisis in the country, with two-thirds of the people in Afghanistan living in dire situations. Additionally, there have been forced deportations of Afghan refugees from neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Iran.

Previously, UNICEF and the World Health Organization had stated during World Breastfeeding Week that improving breastfeeding rates could annually save the lives of more than 820,000 children.

Over the past year, the Ministry of Public Health conducted campaigns reaching 2.5 million mothers to promote breastfeeding. There’s now heightened awareness about infant nutrition, with ongoing efforts to educate women and doctors.

Meanwhile, while efforts are being made to promote breastfeeding and improve infant nutrition in Afghanistan, sustained support and education are crucial to ensure that every child receives the best start in life through proper nutrition and care.
