Nonprofit receives county funding to help West Valley seniors age in place

Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley helps with essential home repairs.

Aging in place

Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley received funding from Santa Clara County to support its efforts to help seniors in the county age in place.

The nonprofit helps older adults by implementing essential repairs and accessibility modifications for disadvantaged seniors in the South Bay. The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved funding for Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley to provide repairs to qualifying homeowners in County Supervisor Joe Simitian’s District 5, which includes Los Gatos, Saratoga and Monte Sereno.

“The last several years have been difficult for everyone; many people were pushed to the absolute edge by the pandemic and the high cost of living,” Simitian said in a release. “People had to put off home repairs to attend to even more pressing needs like food, medicine or paying the mortgage.”

To be eligible for services, homeowners must have a household income at or below 80% of the area median income and demonstrate a need for home repairs.

Creek trail closure

The Los Gatos Creek Trail will be closed from the Main Street Bridge to the Lexington Reservoir every Tuesday and Thursday for the rest of the month for fire fuel reduction work.

The work that the Santa Clara County Fire Department will be doing from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on those days will help reduce the likelihood of wildfires starting along Highway 17, according to the town’s website. The work will not impact traffic on the highway.

Informed book club

The first meeting of the Informed Community Book is set for Aug. 24 at the Los Gatos Library. Meeting on the fourth Saturday of each month, the club is intended as a space for attendees to discuss social and political issues

At the meeting, set for 2-3 p.m., the club will discuss the book “The Color of Law” by Richard Rothstein in the library’s conference room. For more information, visit losgatosca.gov/2828/Los-Gatos-Public-Library.
