MSNBC host explains hurdles Trump will have jump to dump 'just plan weird' J.D. Vance

Noting the seemingly endless flood of questions over whether Donald Trump made a crippling presidential campaign mistake by selecting Sen. J.D. Vance (R- OH) as his 2024 running mate, MSNBC host Ali Velshi pointed out the clock is kicking for the former president to change course.

On Sunday morning, at the same time Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo was grilling the embattled Ohio Republican over accusations that he is "weird" and the "wrong pick," Velshi ran a supercut of Vance making inflammatory and controversial comments about women.

The MSNBC host then pointed out that there is a historical record of presidential candidates changing running mate horses midstream.

Velshi subsequently noted the hoops Trump would have to jump through to rid himself of "just plain weird" Vance.

"Let's say hypothetically Trump decided he and Vance weren't a match made in heaven," Velshi suggested. "Trump could technically still choose a new running mate as long as it happens before state filing deadlines to be on the ballot. Each state's deadline is different but the earliest deadlines fall at the beginning of September and wouldn't be as simple as Trump handpicking someone new and all of a sudden lawn signs change."

"According to the Republican National Committee's rules adopted in 2020, a vacancy of the Republican presidential nominee or their running mate may be filled by the RNC," he elaborated. "Or the RNC could reconvene a national convention to vote for a replacement. "

"But maybe not in this matter because as Trump said last week the role of vice president doesn't matter; the other name on the ticket is irrelevant," he added. "But the choice for vice president does matter when you're dealing with somebody like J.D. Vance who prioritizes the MAGA movement over pillars of democracy and is the embodiment of Project 2025."
