Paphos police clamp down on drugs

Police in Paphos over the weekend arrested of a 33-year-old man for threatening and assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

According to the police on Saturday, shortly after 5am, officers conducting vehicle checks on Ayios Antoniou Street, stopped a car that was being driven dangerously without headlights.

The driver showed obvious signs of intoxication and when the vehicle was stopped, he started shouting and threatening the police.

Officers immediately arrested him while he continued behaving violently.

Police established his identity as a 33-year-old tourist. The man was subsequently tested for alcohol with an indication of 101 milligrams instead of the 22 milligrams which is the legal limit. He additionally tested positive for drugs, whereafter he was re-arrested and taken into custody.

Elsewhere on Friday, around 10.40pm, officers on patrol on Tombs of the Kings Avenue stopped a pedestrian for a check. He was identified as a 21-year-old permanent resident and, in body search that followed, police found15 grams of cannabis on his person.

Police arrested the man who was handed over to the drug squad (Ykan) to be interrogated, accused in writing, and released to be summoned later.
