Sri Lanka on the brink of breaking 27-year drought against India

During the second match of the 3-match ODI series between Sri Lanka and India, Sri Lankan spinner Jeffrey Vandersay became an unlikely hero for his side as he took a 6-wicket haul to break India’s backbone and carried Sri Lanka to a 32-run victory.

It was Vandersay’s first international appearance since the start of the year and just his 16th match for his country since the completion of the 2019 ODI World Cup. He only got a chance to play due to former captain Wanindu Hasaranga getting ruled out of the series due to an injury.

Vandersay took the important wickets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Shivam Dube, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul in his outstanding bowling spell. Thanks to his heroics, Sri Lanka are now on the brink of breaking a 27-year drought against India.

It was back in 1997, that the Sri Lankan side was able to beat India in a bilateral men’s ODI series. If the current Sri Lankan side manages to avoid defeat in the final match of the series, then they will go on to win the series and will also break the drought.

Even if India does defeat Sri Lanka in the final match then they still will only be able to tie the series which might not break Sri Lanka’s drought, but it would turn out to be the first time in 27 years that Sri Lanka would be able to draw a bilateral series against India.
