Tokyo gold medallist Neeraj Chopra will compete in Paris Olympics 2024 men's javelin qualification event on Tuesday.
Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra will be the star attraction on Day 11 of the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday (August 6). Neeraj will hold fort at the Stade de France as the qualification event for the men’s javelin throw gets underway on Tuesday with the athletes divided into two groups.
Apart from Neeraj, 2022 Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena will also be competing in the men’s javelin event. Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena will probably be divided into the two separate groups who will compete to qualify from 1.50pm IST and 3.20pm IST.
Since winning the historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic, the Indian javelin ace has gone on to win the prestigious Diamond League title in 2022 and an Asian Games gold medal in 2023. He is also the reigning world champion in his event heading into the Paris Olympics 2024.
Neeraj Chopra has become an inspiration for Indian athletes in all disciplines since he won the Olympic gold. Now the pressure of the entire nation will be on his shoulders once again with the final of the men’s javelin event set to take place on Thursday (August 8).
“When Neeraj gets the medal,, every athlete is getting growth whether it’s jumpers, throwers or even sprinters – 400 teams. So he’s very inspirational for every athlete, especially for me. Whenever I have any doubts, I will ask him. He definitely replays to me,” Indian long jumper Praveen Chithravel was quoted as saying by ANI.
Another Indian long jump star Murali Sreeshankar, who is missing the Paris Olympics 2024 due to injury, said this about Neeraj Chopra, “Neeraj Chopra is a strong medal contender and he will be going to defend his Olympic gold medal. There have been really good performances by other athletes, like Avinash Sable, and also in the long and triple jump. If things go well, I am sure we will see some surprises from Paris, like in the steeplechase, and the 4×400 relay event would be exciting to see as well. If everything falls right, then our athletes will close the medal tally with not just one medal,” Sreeshankar said.
