BBC Breakfast in major shake up as hosts are replaced and show is forced to switch channels mid-broadcast

BBC Breakfast is going through more changes as the morning show continues to be disrupted by coverage of the Olympics.

Regular Monday morning presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were nowhere to be seen this morning.

Instead, regular weekend presenter Ben Thompson filled in for the duo. He was joined by Sarah Campbell as they delivered today’s latest headlines.

They were joined by BBC Breakfast favourite Carol Kirkwood, who shared today’s weather, as well as sports presenter John Watson, who shared the sad news that cricket legend Graham Thorpe has died at the age of 55.

The presenter shake-up wasn’t the only change to the BBC morning show’s usual programming, either.

As BBC’s coverage of the Olympic Games began at 6:45am on BBC One this morning, the breakfast show was also forced to switch channels mid-broadcast.

BBC Breakfast moved over to BBC Two, where it continued until 9am.

This is the same format the breakfast show followed last week and was criticised for cutting out vital segments like the local news and weather reports.

However, BBC Breakfast underwent another major change at the weekend.

Ben was also front and centre in the BBC studio for Sunday morning’s show, but his regular co-star, Luxmy Gopal, was missing from the sofa.

Viewers at home noticed the changes and quickly took to X, formerly Twitter, to discuss the presenter shake-up.

One viewer wrote: “How come there’s no [woman] on the sofa today? Sunday should be a Luxmy day!”

While another was left confused by the change: “Missus just wondered why is there only one presenter on Sunday’s BBC Breakfast but two during weekdays?”

“I was wondering as well. Holidays, sickness, people on social media moaning about not liking the different pairings?” a third added.

Additionally, the program, which usually airs until 9am, was cut short at 8am to make way for more Olympics coverage on BBC Two.

Who are the current presenters of BBC Breakfast?

The flagship BBC show has had dozens of presenters during its impressive 40 years on air but the current stars are:

Jon Kay – Since 2022

Sally Nugent – Since 2021

Charlie Stayt – Since 2006

Naga Munchetty – Since 2014

Carol Kirkwood – Since 1997

During the show, Ben was working double time as he was alone in the studio, but he handed off to reporters out on location like Sarah Rogers who was live from Southport reporting on the upcoming memorial service for the three stabbing victims.

Meanwhile, back in the studio, Ben shared details of the discussed shock riots across the UK on Saturday.

BBC Breakfast continues tomorrow on BBC One at 6am.
