Mustang Public Schools weighs in on Bible mandate

MUSTANG, Okla. (KFOR) — The Bible battle in the classroom continues as the upcoming school year approaches.

Mustang Public Schools is now joining a growing list of school systems not following those mandated guidelines that were sent down this summer by State Superintendent Ryan Walters.

Yukon, Deer Creek, Moore, Norman, Bixby, Stillwater and Piedmont Schools have all said they won't follow it.

Mustang Public Schools sent a letter Friday to parents regarding where they stand.

The letter saying in part, "MPS will not provide a physical copy of the Bible."

News 4 spoke with a Mustang parent about her thoughts regarding the letter. She asked to remain anonymous to protect her kids.

"I personally think they were trying to convey very carefully that education and religion do not go hand in hand," she says.

She was a student at Mustang Public Schools herself.

Going forward, she says, "I trust that they mean what they say. Mustang to me has always been a very reputable district. That's why I wanted to stay here."

Mustang Public School students will be back in the classroom August 13.

We reached out to the Oklahoma State Department of Education for a comment or statement about Mustang's decision and have not heard back.
