Huge blow for Team GB as British record holder Zharnel Hughes WITHDRAWS from 200m at Olympics 2024
TEAM GB sprinter Zharnel Hughes has withdrawn from the men’s 200m heats due to injury.
The 29-year-old finished sixth in his 100m semi-final on Sunday and aggravated a hamstring issue in the process.
He is now unable to participate in the men’s 200m heats, which are due to take place tonight at the Stade de France.
The sprinter has also been pencilled in for the 4x100m relay this week.
However, his place could now be in doubt due to the hamstring issue.
British Athletics say Hughes will be monitored over the next 48 hours.
A decision will then be made on his relay involvement.
Following his 100m semi-final disappointment, the Brit revealed he suffered the hamstring injury just last month.
He also admitted it hindered his preparations for the Games in Paris.
He said: “[It was] just last month. It’s not the easiest thing to come back from, especially what I had.

“I had a grade two [tear] on the outside of the hamstring, so obviously not getting me enough races to get me in race shape was my issue.”
Hughes became the fastest British man in history last year after recording a personal best of 9.83 seconds.
He smashed Linford Christie’s British record of 9.87 seconds, which stood since the 1993 World Athletics Championships.
Team GB suffered another huge blow this morning when pole vault medal hopeful Molly Caudery failed to qualify for the finals.
