Hunters oppose plans for Mathiatis-Lythrodontas pv park

Cyprus’ hunters have joined voices of opposition to a proposed photovoltaic park in a forest area between a cluster of villages in the Nicosia district.

The Cyprus Federation of Hunting and Wildlife Conservation has issued a press release expressing “strong objections to project no. 2023-135-1, concerning the construction of a 180MW photovoltaic part with 40MW storage units, in the communities of Katalyontas, Lythrodontas and Mathiatis in the Nicosia district.”

In a letter to the Department of Environment, the federation says the implementation of the project would significantly restrict the designated hunting areas, “affecting both hunters and the local economy”.

“Cutting a large number of trees for the implementation of the project would have devastating consequences on the natural environment, worsening the condition of habitats and adversely affecting the species living in these areas.”

The federation calls for a re-evaluation of the consequences and expresses its wish to be included in any discussions.

The interested communities have also opposed the plans.

The Environment Department clarified that the proposed project has not yet been evaluated and no licences have been issued.
