MORE THAN SKIN DEEP

Dr. Howard Sobel, a clinical dermatologic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, has shared how worrying about wrinkles isn’t just skin deep – it can impact your health.

“The worst culprit besides the natural aging process is sun damage, which causes premature aging of our skin,” he told The U.S. Sun.

“Sun damage causes fine lines and wrinkles by damaging our healthy skin cells,” he continued.

“Another big culprit is environmental pollutants, which include sun damage, that causes free radicals and decreases collagen and elastin production.”

He blames the wrinkles that form on our body – and especially our face – on the natural aging process.

“As we age, the turnover of our skin cells slows down, as does collagen production, which causes the skin to thin out and wrinkle,” he said.

“We lose about 1% of our collagen after the age of 30. Similar to when you fold a piece of paper and it creases, when we smile or frown, we get creases known as crow feet or the elevens,” he added.

TOP TRIO

Dr. Sobel also shared how to fight fine lines and other signs of aging with his favorite Fountain of Youth ingredients, including retinol, niacinamide, and vitamin C.

“There are few ingredients like retinol that have been shown to increase collagen and elastin production as well as form blood vessels,” he said.

Dr. Sobel noted how this is what “helps keep the skin looking young while decreasing fine lines and wrinkles.”

While there are a few ways to get your fill of this anti-aging ingredient, including topical treatments with prescription retinoids and over-the-counter retinol, he also developed his own cream.

His Sobel Skin RX 4.5% Retinol Complex Night Treatment offers a patented base containing one of the highest concentrations of retinol.

For even more rejuvenating results, don’t forget to incorporate the other two ingredients into your routine.

“Vitamin C increases collagen production and increases brightness of the skin,” he said.

“Niacinamide creams or serums can increase skin hydration and decrease pore size,” he continued.

SAY HELLO TO SMOOTHER SKIN

Dr. Sobel believes that lasers lead the way when it comes to diminishing the appearance of wrinkles.

He explained how Co2 lasers (helix), as well as microneedling, and radio frequency lasers, such as Vivace, plus Fraxel lasers, decrease hyperpigmentation and precancerous lesions.

He also knows what will keep your smile lines away – and that is sure to keep you smiling.

“Botulinum Toxin injections decrease dynamic lines on our face when smiling or frowning, decreasing contraction of the muscles that causes wrinkles of the skin,” he said.

For an eye-popping undereye look, Dr. Sobel explained how fillers, especially “popular” hyaluronic acid ones including Radiesse or Sculpture, have a high smoothening skin success rate.

Should you apply vitamin C to your skin?

Topical Vitamin C has several benefits for skin including hydrating, reducing redness, and hyperpigmentation.

According to Healthline, it may also help to promote collagen production and reduce the appearance of sun damage.

Research shows that it is safe for most skin types but may cause irritation in concentrations above 20%.

Experts recommend doing a patch test on a small skin area and waiting 24 hours to see if there are side effects before applying it to your face.

Discontinue topical use of vitamin C if you experience rashes, redness, or hives.

“All help to fill fine lines and wrinkles as well as increase skin volume and decrease hallows under the eyes .

To stay on top of your glow game, he wants you to avoid the sun, moisturize often, and stay hydrated.
