Man with scissors shot and killed by LA County Sheriff’s deputy in Paramount

Deputies had used a Taser on the man earlier but it was unsuccessful, according to a Sheriff's department statement.

At least one deputy fatally shot a man holding a pair of scissors who allegedly kept advancing towards them Sunday night in Paramount, authorities said.

No deputies were injured.

Deputies had used a Taser on the man earlier but it was unsuccessful, according to a Sheriff’s department statement.

The shooting happened in a backyard on the 8400 block of Quimby Street just after 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4.

Deputies headed there on a report of a family disturbance and battery. The victim told them his 30-year-old son had punched him in the face after an argument, the statement said.

The son, who was in the backyard, had a pair of scissors about 8 inches length. He allegedly “immediately and aggressively advanced” towards deputies, the statement said, adding deputies used a Taser but it was ineffective.

The man continued advancing towards deputies and was shot, the statement said. Sheriff’s officials did not say how many deputies fired at the man.

Firefighters treated the man but he died at the scene. The medical examiner’s office has not yet publicly identified him.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the shooting to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or go to lacrimestoppers.org
