Heroes’ square in Limassol to get facelift

Plans to remodel Heroes’ square in Limassol were signed on Monday, with the historical area expected to boast its new €39 million (plus VAT) look in 18 months from the time works start in October.

“We are handing over the area to pedestrians and placing emphasis on accessibility,” Limassol mayor Yiannis Armeftis told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

The EU-funded project, carried out in the framework of social cohesion programme Thaleia 2021-2027, provides for an underground exhibition lounge and better connection with Rialto theatre to facilitate outdoor events.

Roads will pass through during the day on weekdays and will then close to traffic, joining the square with nearby restaurant streets.

Armeftis said the project was part of a larger planning to remodel the whole area.

“We want a centre with fewer cars and we must work towards decentralisation,” he said.

The aim, he added, was to have fewer cars, more green and better access.
