Following the resignation and escape of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, General Waqar-ul-Zaman, Chief of Army Staff, announced the formation of an interim government in Bangladesh.
Sheikh Hasina and her sister fled to India on Monday amid political turmoil.
In a televised speech following the Prime Minister’s escape, General Waqar-ul-Zaman stated that he plans to meet with President Mohammad Shahabuddin and hopes to find a solution by the end of the day.
The Army Chief added that he has previously held discussions with opposition parties in the country.
It remains unclear who will take leadership of the interim government.
The Prime Minister resigned following mass protests where at least 95 people were killed in clashes between police and demonstrators nationwide.
Student protests in Bangladesh last month began over government job allocations and escalated in recent weeks into a broader movement against the government.
Reports indicate that police forces and supporters of the ruling party in Bangladesh have resorted to violence to suppress protests, using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse dissenting crowds.
The death toll from protests since July has now exceeded 280 people.
The situation in Bangladesh remains tense as political instability deepens following the resignation of the Prime Minister and widespread protests. International calls for restraint and dialogue underscore the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
