Next up on Pontypridd RFC’s pre-season itinerary is a trip to Pembrokeshire to play Tenby United RFC. Ponty’s excursion into picturesque West Wales takes place on Saturday 10th August, kick-off is 2:00pm.

Saturday’s friendly match at Heywood Lane will be the first time that the two clubs have ever played each other. Rugby has been played in Tenby since around the same time Ponty RFC was founded, but then in 1901 two local clubs Tenby Swifts and Tenby Harlequins merged together to form Tenby United RFC.

The Seasiders enjoyed a successful campaign last season finishing 2nd in Division 2 West gaining promotion into Division 1, and they also won the Pembrokeshire Cup. Proving that rugby is properly alive and kicking in the town, Tenby’s ‘2nd XV’ will enter Division 4 West next summer after a season of planned friendlies.

Ponty will head to West Wales coming off the back of a 28-10 win against Abercwmboi RFC last Friday evening. Ponty used the match to observe a number of trialists and The Village proved to be gritty opposition as the four tries to two scoreline suggests. The Valley Commandos will head west this Saturday expecting another difficult match against Division 1 opposition.

There is a café and a bar at Tenby United’s Heywood Lane ground open to all supporters.

SUPPORTER INFORMATION:

This Saturday was originally scheduled as a double-header, but unfortunately the match between both clubs’ Youth sides has been postponed, therefore the timings on the PRFC Supporters Club’s itinerary has changed slightly.

The amended schedule is as follows – the supporters bus will leave Sardis Road at 9:30am and it will head into Tenby town centre so that supporters can have a drink or two in Tenby United RFC’s clubhouse. The bus will then depart the clubhouse at 1:30pm and head to Heywood Lane for the match. When the match has finished the bus will leave the ground and return to Tenby’s clubhouse in the town before departing home to Pontypridd at 6:30pm.

A reminder that the price for the bus is £15 per person, the following is important information from the Supporters Club – everyone who has booked onto the bus needs to arrive promptly at Sardis Road to leave at 9:30am, the correct fee of £15 per person is required in cash on the morning to pay for your seat, and anyone that does not turn up despite booking will still be charged.

For anyone that requires it, Phil Lycett’s contact number is 01443 662561.

Pre-season match no.2 for Ponty this Saturday – new surroundings, a cracking club and a warm welcome awaits. Ole!
