According to an interview with Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian, the developers behind Baldur’s Gate 3 will continue to make big games, and the two RPGs it has teased at will not be scaled down from the award-winning title we all know them for.

Speaking to PC Gamer, Vincke has confirmed the studio’s ambitions will not be put to rest after just one colossal, 100+ hour game. “The machine is meant to make large games,” he says. “We were made for making large, ambitious RPGs and to try new stuff.”

What’s next for Larian?

The studio recently opened a new office of its studio in Warsaw, Poland, to support the development of “two new very ambitious RPGs now starting development.” The studio has also confirmed that it will not be working on any sequels or DLCs for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Vincke is pretty confident about where the studio is headed next, however, and at the very least, that is to big games. “We actually know what we want from our gameplay systems, how to evolve them, how to do new things … and they’re all big.”

Very little is known about the two planned RPGs that Larian is working on, but Vincke has not ruled out stepping outside the studio’s comfort zone of fantasy and into other genres.

When asked if they were interested in something like sci-fi, Vincke said “Yes, of course. There’s so many things that I would like to do. Just so [few] things that you can do.”

All we know for sure is that in July, many members of Larian met at the company’s Barcelona offices in order to discuss the “lift-off” of their next game.

There is a strong message coming from the top of Larian to the developers: “I started my summit here by literally telling [assembled staff], treat the player like you would want to be treated. That’s literally how you should make a game. I keep on repeating, if you see something in the game that you would not want to see in another game, don’t do it—just keep on working on it, or don’t do it at all.”

He summarises this as “player first, always.”
