Man in grave condition after being wounded by stray bullet while sleeping in Oakland home

A father of two wounded by a stray bullet while he slept in his Oakland home last week remains in grave condition.

OAKLAND — A 33-year-old father of two remained in grave condition Monday after he was wounded last week by a stray bullet while he slept in his East Oakland home, according to authorities and his family.

The shooting, which is being investigated by Oakland Housing Authority police, happened Thursday afternoon in the 2200 block of East 19th Street.

According to a posting on an online fundraising page established for the victim, Run Hua Kuang, he had just gotten home from his job as a delivery truck driver and was taking a nap when a bullet ripped through a wall and struck him in the head.

No one else in the home was injured. Kuang was taken to a hospital where he underwent seven hours of surgery, the narrative said. He was placed on life support in the intensive care unit after the surgery, according to the fundraising page.

What prompted the shooting outside the residence is under investigation. No arrests were announced and no suspect information has been released.

In the fundraiser posting, his sister, Jasmine Kuang, said her brother immigrated to the United States from Taishan, China in 2005 “searching for the American Dream for his family.”

The narrative says he is the sole provider for his wife of seven years and their daughters — one 3 years old and one 7 months — along with his parents, who live together in the home.

“His life was built upon being disciplined and devoted as a husband, father, and son,” the narrative says.

The narrative continues: “This shocking incident has left the entire family traumatized and in deep distress. This tragedy has created a severe financial burden for our family. Furthermore, Hua’s absence is even more of a hardship and struggle since he is the only one who can speak limited English and take care of the responsibilities and communications for the household.

“We are keeping Hua in our prayers for a miracle. We are sincerely grateful for any financial support that you can provide. ”

As of Monday morning, the Go Fund Me account had raised $70,599 toward a goal of $150,000. Anyone wishing to contribute can access the fund at gofund.me/25dfebc1.

Anyone with information about the shooting may call OHA police at 510-535-3100 or its tip line at 510-535-3155. Darolyn Davis, a communications representative with the OHA said the agency has been in contact with the family and “is providing support and services.”
