Suspect in Jeanerette standoff charged in St. Mary Parish

FRANKLIN, La. (KLFY) -- The suspect in the Jeanerette standoff and shooting that resulted in the death of Lafayette Sr. Cpl. Segus Jolivette has been charged with five unrelated crimes in St. Mary Parish, court records show.

Nyjal Aly Hurst, 31, was booked Monday at the St. Mary Parish jail on charges of aggravated domestic abuse child endangerment, armed robbery, carjacking, aggravated battery and illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities.

Authorities said the standoff began July 25 when the Jeanerette City Marshal attempted to serve Hurst arrest warrants at a home in the 2500 block of Martin Luther King Drive.

Hurst previously appeared in court in Iberia Parish on charges of home invasion and aggravated second-degree battery charges, the clerk’s office said, and that a combined $500,000 bond was set for the two charges.

State Police are investigating the standoff and shooting, and have not yet charged Hurst in connection with that incident. Four people were wounded, including Jolivette.
