Justice for all
THERE is no question that violent far right yobs who attack police officers deserve instant justice — and hefty prison terms.
But so, too, do any other hardline groups found to be using the shocking Southport murders as an excuse to destabilise their towns and stoke fear.
After days of chaos, the first priority for Keir Starmer’s “standing army” of police officers is to restore order.
Courts must then be tough on the thugs, sentences have to be properly robust. Places in our overcrowded prisons must be found.
What must not happen now is anything that risks giving the impression Britain has a two-tier justice system.
Staffordshire Police are already reviewing footage of a protest liaison cop telling a group of men to “hide any weapons” inside a mosque.
We have also seen discrepancy in the BBC’s reporting of the disturbances, where what appeared to be hooded Islamist mobs were described as “protesters.”
It’s a perception that parts of the State are unwilling to tell uncomfortable truths that has led to anger and disillusionment in some communities.
That is now being exploited by the racists and fascists organising the violence.
Punishment must be swift. And it must be for all.
