Four ways to save on your favourite Greggs bakery treats after price hike

YOU’VE got to roll with the price hikes . . .

Greggs Chief Executive Roisin Currie recently revealed that the much-loved Greggs sausage roll has gone up from £1.20 to £1.25 — a sneaky little hike of 5p.

Despite bumper profits, the chain says the increase is to cover higher wages for staff.

But if you really want to save on your favourite bakery treats, we’ve got the answers.

BAKE YOUR OWN: Here’s how you make Greggs-style sausage rolls at home . . .

Get the Chef Select ready-roll puff pastry, £1.15, a pack of Birchwood sausages, £1.59, both from Lidl, and an egg to make yourself six sausage rolls at a cost of around 45p each.

If you’ve got an egg spare, you can use that to give your pastry that glossy bakery look.

Squeeze out your sausage meat into a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Unroll your pastry and cut into six equal rectangles.

Add spoonfuls of your sausage meat along the longest side of each rectangle, use beaten egg to dab the pastry with, then fold to make your sausage roll parcel and seal the edge.

Brush the top with the remaining beaten egg and pop into a hot oven for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

FREEZER DOES IT: Or you can find Greggs products in the freezer aisles.

Iceland sells all the Greggs favourites including packs of heat-at-home steak bakes, sausage and bean melts as well as sausage rolls.

Currently, a four-pack of sausage rolls is a bargain £3, or stock up and get five packs for £12, saving £3.

PRIME CUTS: Cut costs further at Asda. A frozen four-pack of pork sausage rolls is £1.19, or a two-pack of steak bakes is £1.45.

For a little less, Aldi sells a two-pack of Crestwood sausage, bean and cheese bakes for just £1.39.

BIG BREAKFAST: At Greggs, the breakfast deal offers a brekkie roll and hot drink for £2.85 until 11am.

And McDonald’s has a summer breakfast bundle, where a single sausage and egg or bacon and egg McMuffin plus hot or cold drink is just £2.79.
