Paris Olympics: What to look for, what to watch on August 6
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Fifteen athletes will claim gold medals on Tuesday at the Paris Olympics and two of them going for gold hail from central Ohio.
The 11th day of the 2024 Olympics could be a memorable one for the city of Pickerington as two of its athletes hope to take home medals in track and field. Outside of that, multiple USA teams are playing do-or-die matchups while one is hoping to return to a gold medal game.
Here is what to watch for on the 11th day of the Paris Olympics.
Pickerington natives go for gold in athletics
Two graduates from separate Pickerington high schools will go for gold Tuesday in track and field. Pick Central graduate McKenzie Long will race in the highly-anticipated 200m final at 3:40 p.m. and faces a difficult field, featuring favorite Gabby Thomas of Team USA and the 100m champion Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia.
In the field, Pick North grad and ex-Cincinnati Bearcat Annette Echikunwoke competes in the women's hammer throw final beginning at 2 p.m. With the unpredictability of the hammer throw, it looks like we will have an exciting final at the Stade de France.
USA single-elimination games
The second week of the games is always highlighted by track and field action and the knockout stage games for all of the team sports. On Tuesday, five American teams will play a win-or-go-home match.
It begins at 11 a.m. when the women's volleyball team meets Poland in the quarterfinals. The other quarterfinal matchups include men's basketball against Brazil at 3:30 p.m., women's water polo versus Hungary at 2:35 p.m., and beach volleyball duo Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng face Switzerland at 4 p.m.
All of this is headlined though with a noon semifinal in women's soccer between the Americans and Germany. USA beat Germany 4-1 earlier in the group stage as they seek its first Olympic final appearance since 2012.
