Paris Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat will look to put disappointment of 2016 Rio Olympics behind her as she bids to win her maiden Olympic medal in the wrestling 50kg category.
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat till a year back was the face of athletes protest against the dictatorial reign of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Life comes a full circle for Vinesh Phogat as she gets ready to take on Yui Susaki on Japan in her opening bout of 50kg wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Tuesday (August 6).
It was due to the efforts of Vinesh and Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia that WFI got rid of it’s president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh but not before months of protest on the streets of Delhi.
In April 2023, Vinesh skipped on training in Sweden to prepare for Asian Games and World Championships to continue her protest against the WFI President in New Delhi. In May 2023, Vinesh, Bajrang, Sakshi and Sangeeta Phogat, among other protesting wrestlers, were detained by the Delhi Police after they started a march towards the new Parliament on the day of its inauguration. An FIR was also lodged against them for disrupting peace.
Later that year, Vinesh announced that she will have to skip the Asian Games after injuring her knee during a training session. This was the 2nd time she injured her knee after the 2016 Rio Olympics nightmare. She finally resumed training in December 2023 and vowed that she will qualify for the Olympics somehow.
Vinesh competed in both the 50kg as well as the 53kg trials for the Olympics berth because she wasn’t sure that WFI ad-hoc committee will send her to Paris in the 53kg category as Antim Panghal had already secured an Olympics quota berth in that same category.
Vinesh finally won a quota for the Paris Olympics by beating Laura Ganikyzy in the semifinal of the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in the 50kg category. This will be a new category for Vinesh, but she enjoyed a few successful years in the 50kg class – winning the 2018 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games gold medals and a silver at Asian Championships.
But she will be up against reigning Olympic champion and four-time World Champion Yui Susaki, who is yet to lose a match in her international career. It will be almost impossible task for Vinesh to clear the first hurdle given that she is up against the Japanese, who won the gold at Tokyo Games without conceding a single point.
Since Susaki is the favourite to reach the final and it can open up the repechage route for Vinesh, who dropped down to women’s 50kg category. Vinesh is appearing in her third Olympics.
