People say my dress pick is an ‘absolute no’ to wear as a wedding guest – they warned me about side eye

WHEN it comes to wedding guest etiquette, there are a handful of unspoken rules, the main one being not to upstage the bride.

One woman’s outfit pick for her friend’s big day risked doing just that, with people telling her it’s an “absolute no.”

A Reddit user showed off the dress she planned to wear to a friend’s wedding

In her Reddit post, user Giminoo shared pictures of her dress pick for the occasion.

She explained that she thought the look fit well with her friend’s wedding theme.

“The bride’s dress code says only formal full length and tea length evening gowns,” the poster said.

She tried on the look, as well as showing another shot of it hanging up.

The sleeveless beige dress featured bead detailing throughout and a high neckline.

It also had mesh detailing that exposed her midriff and her lower legs.

“I bought this dress a couple years ago for a cruise I was going on, but ended up not going, so it’s just been sitting in my closet,” she explained.

“I was trying to utilize a dress that I already own if possible.”

The Redditor added that she has another option available but wasn’t as keen on it.

“I do have another dress that my mum bought me a while back, but I’ve been avoiding wearing it because I feel like it’s kind of ‘matronly’ for my age.”

Reddit users shared their thoughts on the dress in the comments section.

“I feel like I’m being trolled because the first two pics look like you’re wearing a wedding dress. Don’t wear this,” wrote one reader.

“I thought this WAS a wedding dress. It’s too light coloured,” agreed another person.

A third Redditor said the dress was “absolutely not wedding attire.”

“This one is too close to a bridal color, in my opinion,” said another commenter.

Wedding Guest Outfit Etiquette

If you're struggling to decided on a dress to see you through wedding season, here's a few rules on what not to wear so you don't get in trouble.

  • Folklore says that wearing red at a wedding means you slept with the groom.
  • Casual attire like jeans and flip flops should always be avoided.
  • Any colour that could be picked up as white or cream – even if it’s not.
  • Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered.
  • Wearing white is a massive no-no if you’re not the bride.

“I would have side eyed someone in this dress if it were my wedding.”

Another person pointed out that the colour wasn’t the only issue with the dress.

“Too light. Too bridal in design and embroidery. Sorry,” they explained.

“I think you have your answer already. It’s too light and it is giving prom,” pointed out one reader.

“Definitely not appropriate. It’s way to bridal,” wrote another person.
