Sports briefs: Pacifics repeat as Pacific Division champions

The San Rafael Pacifics got all the runs they would need in a three-run first inning to win the decisive Game 3 of the Pecos League Pacific Division Championships Series, 9-2, against the Bakersfield Train Robbers on Sunday night.

Blake Diggle and John Bicos led the way offensively with three hits apiece. Esai Santos and Dan Crossan had two hits apiece for San Rafael, which advances to the Pecos League championship against either the Garden City Wind or the Alpine Cowboys.

San Rafael is looking to defend its title after defeating Tuscon in three games to win the 2023 championship. Garden City and Alpine begin their three-game series for the Mountain Division title on Tuesday. The Pecos League finals are set to begin on Friday.

Beau Dorman singled in the first inning on Sunday to drive in the first run for the Pacifics. Aki Buckson added a two-run single for a 3-0 lead. Bakersfield, which won Game 1 of the series before dropping the last two games, answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. San Rafael scored twice in the third and four times in the fourth to seize a 9-1 lead.

Starting pitcher Alex Valasek worked seven innings and earned the win, scattering nine hits. Valasek allowed two earned runs and struck out seven hitters.

Chris Blyskal drove in two runs. Dorman drew three walks and scored three runs.

The Redwood High School Athletic Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for athletes, coaches, special recognition, and team categories. Athletes must have graduated in 2010 or before and participated in any sports activity while at Redwood.
