Isaac and Solomou memorials on Sunday

Memorial services for the deaths of Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou who were both killed days apart 28 years ago in August 1996 by Turkish forces in the Dherynia buffer zone will be held on Sunday in Paralimni.

On August 11, 1996, Tasos Isaac was beaten to death in the UN buffer zone by Turkish Cypriots or alleged members of the Turkish organisation known as ‘Grey Wolves’.

On August 14, during a demonstration following Isaac’s funeral, his cousin, Solomos Solomou, was shot dead as he tried to pull down a flag on the Turkish Cypriot side of the buffer zone.

As every year, the Isaac-Solomou remembrance initiative will be organising a bikers’ ride on Saturday to their graves at Paralimni cemetery.

Rides will begin in all towns late in the afternoon and will merge for their 8.30pm arrival at the cemetery.

On Sunday, memorial services will be held at the St Demetrios church in Paralimni, led by Neapolis bishop Porfyrios.

The government will be represented by Deputy Minister for Migration Nicolas Ioannides.

The memorial will be followed by a blessing and the laying of wreaths at the graves of Isaac and Solomou.
