Cyprus police awaiting directions from UK regarding far-right fugitive

The presence of British far-right fugitive Tommy Robinson in Cyprus has not gone unnoticed by the authorities, police said on Tuesday.

Robinson, a former member of the fascist British National Party and the founder of the anti-Muslim English Defence league whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is currently vacationing in Ayia Napa while evading a court hearing in the UK.

According to the police, following orders from police chief Stelios Papatheodorou, the Cypriot authorities have already contacted the British police and offered assistance if needed.

For the moment, according to the police, there were no official instructions regarding Robinson’s presence on the island.

Robinson, the former leader of the English Defence League, is staying at an all-inclusive resort in Ayia Napa. Despite being abroad, he is allegedly inciting unrest back in the UK.

For the past week, the United Kingdom has been gripped by far-right riots which have erupted in towns and cities across the country after it was falsely reported that a mass stabbing last Monday was committed by a Muslim migrant.

Hotels which have been utilised to temporarily house asylum seekers were set on fire with people inside.

Last week, Robinson posted numerous messages online supporting violent attacks on “migrant hotels”, calling for “mass deportations” and claiming that the ongoing turmoil is fuelled by “Muslims and migrants”.

Robinson was released on bail without conditions last Sunday after being arrested over the weekend but failed to appear at the Royal Court on Monday.

The far-right activist is accused of breaching a 2021 court order issued after he was successfully sued by Syrian refugee Jamal Hijazi for making false allegations about him.

The Cyprus police and their British counterparts are in open communication, and further developments on the matter are seemingly on the cards.
