‘Unforgettable’ scenes follow as loose horse runs the wrong way during race

THIS is the terrifying moment a loose horse runs the wrong way into others during the middle of a race.

It is a mystery why track officials did not void the contest as soon as they could with the horse rampaging round the track.

The loose horse charges head-first at the others as they thunder down the home straight
One jockey pulls his mount sharply to the right as the rogue runner skids to a stop
Miraculously no one was injured – and the loose horse even joins in with the end of the race

And it was only down to the quick-thinking and expert horsemanship of the jockeys that total disaster was averted.

The chaotic scenes unfolded at Hipodromo Independencia in Rosario, Argentina, last Sunday.

According to reports, Cocky Cat got upset in the starting stalls and was taken out by the handlers.

His rein was held onto by another handler but he kept playing up and reared.

The horse then got spooked when the starting gates opened and broke free, setting off the wrong way round the track.

By this point the 15 other horses had already charged out of the gates.

Usually in this situation track officials would wave a flag as quickly as could to tell jockeys to pull their horses up and void the contest.

But this time they were completely unaware Cocky Cat was running free behind them.

And it was not until the riders were thundering down the home straight that Cocky Cat came into view.

With the rogue horse running head-first right at them, the jockey leading the race pulls his mount sharply to the right.

The loose horse then dodges to his right and skids to a stop, almost slamming into the rail, while all the others avoid crashing into them.

It is believed none of the jockeys or horses were injured and one local news report said: “When it seemed that tragedy was knocking at the door, a miracle happened.”

Footage of the incident has been shared widely online with one viewer summing up the view of many by saying: “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.”
