'Sad trombone': MSNBC's Mika laughs that Trump is now 'yesterday's news'

MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski punctuated a scathing analysis of Donald Trump's election chances with a "sad trombone" sound effect.

The presidential race has been upended since Joe Biden stepped aside and endorsed Kamala Harris, and Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Ben Wikler told "Morning Joe" the vice president's ascendance took away Trump's advantage against the 81-year-old president's age — and made his own fitness a liability.

"It's like a flipped script," Wikler said. "The Republican campaign for so long has been focused on this kind of propaganda campaign about physical attributes with these cherry-picked clips and all this kind of thing, but now the huge Republican focus on that, it really has rebounded and now hurts Trump.

"We can see so many voters who are kind of reflecting back this feeling of wanting to move forward, not to go back. Trump kind of represents something that people would like to leave in the rear-view mirror, for so many voters, especially the sense of menace, dread and chaos."

"He also feels like yesterday's news, which psychologically seems like it's pretty tough for Donald Trump," Wikler said. "He always likes to be Mr. Today, but it is pretty clear that this is a Harris day. This is a Harris – and we'll soon know who her vice president is – day, and a vision of future where everyone can get ahead.

"The government is pulling out of people's personal lives and focusing on fixing the roads and delivering for people. That is what most people want. We hear that at doors all the time. I think a lot of people kind of have that intuition, they think the government's job is to do what the government does, not override people's personal decisions about their lives."

Brzezinski then attempted to sum up his harsh assessment by mimicking the "sad trombone" sound effect used in cartoons and game shows, but she wasn't too satisfied with her effort.

"Wah-wah-wah," she said, laughing. "I was trying to do it, didn't work."
