AFSPA removed from most parts of northeast: Govt

The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, granting extensive powers to the armed forces in disturbed areas, has been lifted from most parts of the northeast, except a few districts and police station areas, as informed in Parliament on Tuesday. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai highlighted the law's complete withdrawal from Tripura and Meghalaya and partial withdrawal from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland. This move follows a significant improvement in the region's security situation, marked by a reduction in insurgency incidents and fatalities since 2014.
