Jib halyard

I have a friend who has a Laser 2, recently purchased. He would like to replace the rope-to-wire halyard with a purely dyneema halyard. I suspect this would not be class legal, but he won't be racing it. I'm the rope/splicing guy. I have not seen the boat or halyard yet. It looks like the jib luff wire/halyard function as the forestay. It sounds like there's a cable crimp on the wire part of the halyard that seats into a forked hook to keep the jib up. Am I correct so far?
