Autopsy on girl in drowning incident unclear

The autopsy on the seven-year-old girl who had a drowning incident at a Protaras hotel pool did not clarify her cause of death, police said on Tuesday.

Samples were taken for lab tests as part of an ongoing investigation into the cause of death, police specified.

Officers are taking statements from lifeguards at the pool, hotel staff and other people who were on site, according to spokesman for the Famagusta branch of the force Steve Theodoulou.

“Statements will also be taken from the parents, who were in the area.”

Theodoulou said on Sunday at noon, the seven-year-old girl was found unconscious at a pool in a Protaras hotel where she was staying with her parents.

Onlookers took her out of the pool and she was taken by ambulance to Famagusta general hospital where she received first aid and regained consciousness.

According to Theodoulou, the girl was then transferred to Makarios hospital in Nicosia. During the route there, complications emerged which led to her intubation. She was also placed on a ventilator.

Around 10 minutes past midnight on Monday, the child died at the Makarios hospital intensive care unit.

Famagusta criminal investigation department (CID) continues investigations.
