Charles Cyphers of 'Halloween' horror series dies

While he has dozens of acting credits, Charles Cyphers is likely best known for his recurring role in the "Halloween" horror series.

(NEXSTAR) — Charles Cyphers, beloved for his role in the "Halloween" franchise, has died, according to his manager. He was 85.

Cyphers died after a brief illness in Tucson, Arizona, on Sunday, manager Chris Roe told Variety.

Calling him "a lovable and sensitive man," Roe said Cyphers "always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you."

"He was a close friend and client of many years who will be dearly missed," Roe continued. No additional details were provided.

Cyphers, a graduate of Cal State at Los Angeles, was born in Niagara Falls in New York, according to his IMDb page.

While his acting credits date back to the early 1970s, Cyphers is well-known for his role as Sheriff Leigh Brackett in the classic 1978 horror film, "Halloween." He reprised the role in its sequels, 1981's "Halloween II" and 2021's "Halloween Kills." The latter is his most recent acting credit on IMDb.

Cyphers also made appearances in various hit TV shows, like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "ER," "Murder, She Wrote," "Night Court," "Dallas," "Matlock," and "Seinfeld."

David Gordon Green, who directed "Halloween Kills," told Entertainment Weekly in 2021 he had done a Zoom call with Cyphers when asking him to come back as Brackett.

"He was living peacefully in New Mexico without a lot of professional ambition," Green explained. "I think he probably got a kick out of the call, and we had a great time on set together."

Cyphers shared similar sentiments when asked about his return in 2022, the New York Post reports.

"To be called back again in a film, it’s unheard of after 40 years. Most people are dead," Cyphers said during HorrorCon UK. "Thankfully I didn’t die so they brought me back."
