Stove fire causes $11,000 in damage to Manhattan apartment

MANHATTAN (KSNT) - Manhattan firefighters doused an apartment cooking fire Monday that caused more than $10,000 in damage.

The Manhattan Fire Department (MFD) was called around 11 p.m. on Aug. 5 to an apartment in the 1200 block of Kearney Street for a report of a fire in progress. Crews arriving at the scene found a three-story apartment building with no visible signs of a fire.

Firefighters investigating the situation found smoke and fire inside one of the apartments on coming from a stove. The fire was extinguished with the last of the MFD leaving the scene around 1 a.m. on Aug. 6.

The MFD said no one was injured during the incident. Smoke alarms alerted the person living in the apartment where the fire originated who was able to leave safely. This resident is displaced due to the fire.

An MFD investigation shows the fire was started by an unattended cooking fire. A total of $10,000 damage was caused to the apartment building and $1,000 in damage to contents.
