Four ways to stay on top of spending by using coins and notes instead of card

MORE people are returning to using cash for day-to-day spending.

Cash user numbers are at a four-year high, says trade body UK Finance.

Using coins and notes can help you stay on top of spending, which can be done with these top tips . . .

CASH STUFFING: This method involves withdrawing money and dividing it into different spending categories and popping in an envelope for each.

You then take cash from the relevant envelope when you need to buy something.

For example, you may have different envelopes for food, nights out, petrol and hobbies. When you are heading to the supermarket, you would take funds from the food envelope and are not able to spend any more.

It is ideal for preventing impulse buying which can add up.

GIVE IT A DAY: Instead of dividing cash by lifestyle category, you can instead cut it down by time. Take the money you want to spend for the month, then divide it down by week and then by day.

Again, section off into envelopes — any leftover funds you have at the end of each day, put it away for savings.

SAVVY SAVER: If you are using more cash, you could start a saving challenge with your coins. For example, putting £1 in a pot ever day — creating a £365 bonus after a year. Or try putting aside a £2 coin every time you get one in your change. The downside is that you won’t earn any interest on money saved in this way.

COVER CHECK: If you are keeping more cash in your home, check your insurance cover to make sure it is protected in the event of a break-in or fire, for example.

Some policies may not provide cover or have a limit.

Some bank accounts and savings apps, including Revolut and Monzo, allow you to create digital savings pots to help with budgeting in a similar way to physical envelopes.
