Fasting, Meal Substitute Improved Blood Sugar More Than Diabetes Drugs

People who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the past year who engaged in 2 consecutive days of fasting and 5 days of typical eating including 1 meal replacement lowered their glycated hemoglobin A1c levels more after 4 months than did those who received metformin or empagliflozin, a recent study found. Participants who engaged in intermittent fasting and meal replacement also lost more weight than did those in either the metformin or empagliflozin groups.
